Between 2015 and 2017, the CEFC committed a total of $170 million to SGCH for the construction of up to 500 energy efficient homes, including 300 to be built for the NSW Government’s Social and Affordable Housing Fund (SAHF).
The CEFC finance helped SGCH take construction to the next level, with buildings completed to a Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS) average of 7.5 stars. The energy efficiency and liveability were designed into buildings for a marginal cost to provide ongoing benefits for tenants. Improved insulation, LED lighting, energy efficient appliances, smart meters and solar installations were some of the features included in the high-performing buildings.
SGCH estimated that each new home was saving its residents an average of $500 a year on energy costs. In June 2020, SGCH repaid the CEFC finance, after securing a commitment from the National Housing Finance Investment Corporation (NHFIC).
At that time, SGCH CEO Scott Langford said that by working with the CEFC, SGCH had put keys in the hands of 298 households and upgraded 1,230 homes with energy efficient features. The CEFC relationship with SGCH has helped the housing provider reshape its commitment to better outcomes. Enhanced environmental performance of its buildings is now part of its approach across all its work.
